403 Forbidden - Out of the box

Set everything up as per instruction for macosx.
Changed file permissions, mod-rewrite ON, AllowOverride All
Got passed the INSTALL (with some php date warnings).

403: You don't have permission to access / on this server.

http://mysitellite/sitellite
404: The requested URL /sitellite was not found on this server.

Something in the .htaccess rewrite?
If I remove the .htaccess I can access the site but any links from the main page don't work as they are not being handled by the rewrite.

Suggestions/fixes?
